In 1981, Pinochet privatized almost all of Chile’s water resources and in the following thirty years the rights to their water were sold to large companies and corporations for producing hydroelectric power. Now the construction of five large dams is threatening Chilean Patagonia. Like Fireflies tells the stories of three Chilean women whose lives either have been devastated or will be badly affected by the construction of the dams and who try to face the corporate giant that is about to crush them and destroy their land by brutally imposing a conception of progress that they do not share.

Nel 1981 Pinochet privatizza la quasi totalità delle risorse idriche in Cile. Nei trent’anni successivi i diritti per lo sfruttamento dell’acqua vengono ceduti a imprese nazionali e multinazionali interessate a produrre energia idroelettrica. Oggi sulla Patagonia cilena incombe il progetto HidroAysén che prevede la costruzione di cinque grandi dighe sui fiumi Pascua e Baker. Muovendosi tra passato e presente, il film ripercorre questi avvenimenti attraverso la storia di tre donne che, a centinaia di chilometri di distanza, provano a resistere al gigante idroelettrico che sta per calpestare la loro terra, imponendo un’idea di progresso che a loro non appartiene.
